Faith of the Transient Worker...

So far, I've said little about my current job, other than to moan frequently on the lack of shifts being provided. The reason for this is due to the nature of the work. My current employer is a, shall we say, moderately sized company that specialises in various security related areas. And frankly, I'm not sure how much of what I do is allowed to be revealed in public given my employers have issued guidelines on the use of social networking sites and blogs. So to cover myself legally, if I need to refer to specific moments at work, I will fictionalise a lot of it to prevent getting into trouble. Or avoid it as much as possible...
Having said that, The Company, as I will call my employer, is an interesting place to work. It has me mostly dealing with sports events but concerts and various public gatherings also fall under it's specialities. There are times when I could be working at a stadium one day and the next end up dealing with a marathon in the street the next. It has allowed me to meet all manner of interesting, if not necessarily sane, people in various parts of the country.

My main issue with the job is that because I'm employed under a zero hours contract, income isn't guaranteed or as steady as I like. The number of shifts I get also varies. There will be months where I get lots of shifts, especially during the busier parts of the year e.g. Christmas. And then there are often months where I get little to no work. Which can be a big problem with all the bills I have to pay.

Being a supposed figure of authority can be a strange experience. You get people who will deliberately seek you out as the first sign of help in any situation. From a medical emergency to just trying to find the nearest toilet. We do our best to help them as much as possible. Although sometimes you get some really odd questions which throw you off a bit. And then there is the flipside, where people decide to verbally, sometimes physically, hurl abuse at you. Which leads to some rather uncomfortable and in some cases outright hairy situations. It helps to have a sense of humour as you can laugh at some of the more unusual situations later on when time has passed and everyone has calmed down. But I've also heard of and seen, and in one case experienced, when happens when things get a bit out of hand.

Not really much point to this post. I guess the conclusion is that the job has its good and bad days, like any other job. But I consider it to be a really interesting line of work and would change little in it.
